As a designer, I must tell you, if your copy sucks, there’s no way you can hide that by making it look nice. In every design process, copywriting comes first. It the starting point. 5 books to improve your copywriting
This is the one-in-all guide. In her book, Everybody Writes, Ann Handley provides all kinds of content creators with easy-to-apply advice. This book gives you instructions on the process of writing, provides you with grammar rules, and tips on how to tell a story. You will learn to write for social media, your blog or a newsletter. Plus, there’s a tool list at the end including writing and editing tools you might want to check out. Honestly, what do you want more?
This is something different. Anne Lamott dives into her own experience with writing and teaching aspiring writers. Her book is situated on the creative site of writing. Lamott provides advice on how to find something to write about, how to tell stories, or how to get over “shitty first drafts”. It’s brilliantly written, with sad as well as hilarious anecdotes.
Part memoir, part guidebook. Reading about King’s background in writing was super interesting for me (I’m a huge fan of King’s books). But this book also provides you with advice. King demystifies the art of writing. He talks about BS rules, you might want to abandon and gives tips on how to easily notch up your writing.
There needs to be a classic on this list, right? With the Elements of Style, Strunck and White have created a reference book every writer should have at home. Since English is my second language, I like to have this book on my shelf to look up grammar rules and expressions from time to time. But this book also includes a list of rules to improve your writing style. Quick and easy to digest.
The Subtitle says it all, “Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling”. Part of improving your copywriting is to learn how to tell a story. Annette Simmons teaches us how to tell a story well and how to engage and influence our readers. She’s a master of storytelling, who captivates you with personal stories and examples of myths and fables she gathered, right after the first couple of pages.
