Stock photos can save time and are budget-friendly. But at times you can get a bit tired of seeing the same photos pop up everywhere. You want to stand out in the market and you want your photos to represent your brand. You can do this simply by getting a bit creative and customizing your stock photos. Here are 5 ways to customize stock photos and make them unique.
The easiest way to customize a photo and make it yours is by cropping it. Using a different section of the photo than everybody else who just uses the photo as it is. You can zoom in or rotate the image to find the best angle to cut. Some photos can also be flipped if there’s no text in them. Make sure you cut the photo to the size you need e.g. square for Instagram. If you’re lucky you can crop several different parts from one photo and create many individual images.
With an overlay on your photo, you can add your own brand colors or customize a stock photo to your needs. Overlays can cover the full photo or only a part of it. The possibilities are endless. A simple solution can be picking a color and adjusting the transparency. But you could also add a gradient or a texture to your image. Overlays are often used to put text on top of a photo which can otherwise be hard to read.
This brings us straight to the next point. Adding text like a quote or a blog post title is what we often want to do. This isn’t only a great way to put information into a graphic but it also gives you an opportunity to add your brand style. You can choose your brand fonts and colors to make your images recognizable. Depending on the photo you work with you need to decide how to integrate this text best. That’s why flat lay photos with lots of negative space are very popular. They give you enough room to integrate your text. If this isn’t possible you might want to consider adding an overlay or at least a small colored shape behind your text. Text on a photo can be hard to read so you need to pay attention to your colors and the size of the text as well.
Knock out background
Sometimes you don’t even need the full photo. Especially if you want to add text or other elements to your design. Knocking out the background of your photo or cutting out an object to place it in your graphic is a great way to customize a stock photo. Sure it’s a bit tricky and you need to know your way around Photoshop to do so. Tracing objects and cutting them out takes a bit of time. But you can add your own background after. Add your band colors. It makes you more flexible with the usage of your photo.
Lastly, you can personalize every photo by adding your own style. Place your brand design assets on the photo. This can be logos, icons, or illustrations. You can also use lines and shapes to add interest. The choice is up to you.
